That ravenous increase in appetite is caused primarily by the THC present in marijuana and marijuana-derived products. The cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) gets activated and this can lead to the desire to eat excessively. THC also interacts with cells within the brain, called pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, which are supposed to inhibit hunger. THC over-stimulates the POMC neurons, essentially making them function in reverse. It is this POMC interaction that is theorized to be the main contributor to the insatiable cravings.
A severe reaction has its place in medicine and can be therapeutic. People facing extreme circumstances, such as cancer and cancer treatments, or AIDS, often go through Wasting Syndrome. Wasting Syndrome is defined as uncharacteristically large decreases in weight and body fat. Does CBD Provoke The Munchies?
Most of us know that THC-rich cannabis can cause a spike in hunger known as the “munchies”. But what about CBD? Does cannabidiol provoke cravings or stimulate appetite?

According to researchers at the University of São Paulo  , CBD may have the potential to decrease symptoms of social anxiety disorder associated with public speaking. Using a simulated public speaking test on 24 SAD patients, the study found that “pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alert in their anticipatory speech”.
Could this principle be applied to those suffering from both pain and nausea? A 2008 research paper alludes  to the antihyperalgesic potential of cannabis—specifically CBD. Further studies suggest CBD’s antiemetic potential  .
Based on the information available, CBD doesn’t appear to affect hunger in a disadvantageous form. With much still to learn about CBD’s impact on our metabolism, burning calories, and increasing appetite, for now, it’s difficult to provide a definitive answer.
