CBD for Dogs with Hip & Joint Issues
Our mailbag is always full of questions from our friends about how to best care for their pups. And one of the most frequent questions we receive is what to do when pet’s hips and joints get creaky and sore. So let’s talk a little bit about what you can do to help.
What Causes Hip & Joint Problems In Dogs?
Hip and joint troubles come in two unhappy packages: degenerative and developmental.
Degenerative joint pain appears over time as aging joints slowly stop working as well as they used to. Unfortunately, the immune system goes a little haywire with age and actually attacks the joints.
Hip and joint problems often occur when dogs hit their senior years (that means age 6-7 and up). As they age, the cartilage (or the soft cushion between bones) begins to thin and cause rubbing of the bones. Stiffness and soreness in those joints then make it difficult for dogs to get up and go.
Developmental issues, on the other hand, are usually genetic and happen when hips or joints don’t grow the way they’re supposed to. The most common type here is hip dysplasia, which strikes when the hip joint’s ball doesn’t quite fit into its socket and the two grind against each other whenever the leg moves.
Hip dysplasia is more common in dwarf, large and purebred dogs. Certain breeds are also at a higher risk than others. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals brachiocephalic dogs like Bulldogs and Pugs have the highest rates of hip dysplasia.
Other breeds that are prone to hip dysplasia include:
- French Bulldogs
- Labrador Retrievers
- Golden Retrievers
- Saint Bernards
- German Shepherds
- Great Danes
- Neopolitan Mastiffs
- American Staffordshire Terriers
- Basset Hounds
- Catahoula Hounds
- Chesapeake Bay Retrievers
- Norwegian Elkhounds
- Chow Chows
- Old English Sheepdogs
How do I know if my pet has hip and joint issues?
Hip and joint issues are a real drag, and you may observe lameness, reduced energy, restricted movement, trouble with stairs and furniture, difficulty walking or rising, etc.
Unfortunately, our furry companions can’t tell us what’s hurting, but if they lose interest in some of their favorite activities like going for walks and getting up to greet you at the door, hip & joint issues are often the culprit.
But to be completely sure, be sure to visit your vet and they will let you know what’s at the root of their issues.
How do you use CBD for Joint Issues?
Serving size: 2mg CBD per 10 pounds of weight to start. So if your pup is 50 pounds, 10mg of CBD per serving is a great starting point.
When: Try giving your dog CBD in the morning and evening. CBD also works best when taken on an empty stomach so avoid giving them their treat and hour before and after they get their meals. CBD lasts between 4-8 hours, longer for older pups with slower digestion. So we recommend a treat in the morning and evening.
Consistency: Make sure to give CBD to your dog every day, at the same time, to see the best results. If, after a few days, the amount you gave is not enough, feel free to double the amount you give until you see them feeling more mobile and happier.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CBD PRODUCT?
Make sure the product you buy is of high quality and from a reputable brand. Your best friend deserves the best and there’s nothing worse than spending your money on products that don’t work.
3rd Party Lab Tested
3rd party just means a laboratory that isn’t associated with the company tested the CBD to ensures the amount of CBD on the label matches what’s in the product. To guarantee the efficacy of the CBD that you buy, check the 3rd party test results. All reputable companies have it listed online or will happily give it to you if you ask.
Organically Grown Hemp
Hemp is a natural bioaccumulator, meaning it absorbs nutrients as well as contaminants from the soil as it grows. Make sure the CBD you buy is from a farm that uses organic practices to ensure there are no pesticides or metals in your CBD.

Top CBD Oil for Dogs With Anxiety and Arthritis (And Other CBD-Infused Treats)
If your dog suffers from anxiety and arthritis, then this CBD oil can help manage their pain.
As fun as having a dog is, one of the most difficult parts of the relationship is communication. Unable to tell you exactly what’s wrong with them, there are plenty of signs that dogs give off to show that they’re in pain or discomfort – nowadays, two of the most common ailments that a dog may be dealing with is anxiety and arthritis.
There are several kinds of anxiety in dogs, but all of them make your dog manifest the same symptoms. Regardless of the cause, there are ways to put your dog at ease – and nowadays, owners are turning to CBD oil. This is also used to treat arthritis in dogs, which is just as painful in dogs as it is in humans. What may have been second nature to your dog during his younger years now becomes troublesome to accomplish.
What Is Arthritis?
A dog’s joints surfaces are covered with a thin layer of smooth cartilage lubricated with joint fluid (synovial fluid) that allows the two join surfaces to glide over one another with minimal friction freely. As a dog ages, the cartilage changes and becomes less smooth to rub together, increasing friction, discomfort, damage to the cartilage, and reduced mobility.
Although arthritis is a condition typically seen in senior dogs, it can develop at an early age. Some of the causes include an abnormal rubbing within the joint due to joint instability, damage due to trauma, or damage from abnormal cartilage development. Whatever the reason, you will notice your dog in distress as they struggle with the pain and stiffness.
Signs of Arthritis in Dogs
With arthritis in dogs, other factors such as infection, injury, genetic makeup, and immune disease can affect its progression. You will also notice that your dog may be suffering from pain in the hips, shoulders, knees, and elbows.
Many signs indicate that your dog is suffering from arthritis, they usually appear slowly, and you will notice that they may worsen over time. These are the signs of arthritis in dogs that you should look out for:
- Decreased interest in walks or other engaging activities that they used to love
- Difficulty in climbing stairs or jumping
- Stiffness and hard time in getting up from a lying down or sitting position
- Yelping when touched
- Regularly licking the affected area or joint
- Behavioral changes like increased irritability or aggression despite being good-natured
You may notice these signs and dismiss them as part of the aging process. However, it is essential to be on the lookout for arthritis in dogs as having it treated as soon as possible could do wonders in helping your dog manage the pain and move around comfortably.
Types and Signs of Anxiety in Dogs
There are several reasons a dog can become anxious, the most common being separation anxiety – their not liking being separated from you. Fear of loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks and even changes in their environment can get them anxious. Less common forms include going to the vet, moving houses, and car trips.
Some of the signs of anxiety in dogs that owners should look for include digging, shivering, not eating, urinating more frequently, destroying the furniture, running away or cowering in a corner, pacing and panting (especially when it’s not hot), and barking.
There is a variety of options on how to treat your dog and this includes behavioral training, medical treatment, and taking preventive measures. You can sometimes cuddle them – though some experts don’t agree with this as it apparently reinforces the anxiety. One of the most popular ways to treat a dog nowadays is by using CBD oil, not just for anxiety but for different ailments, too.
