This is what happened when Lily Allen tried a CBD facial

CBD (aka cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive part of marijuana) is beauty’s biggest trend and is now being built into facials. Lily and the Stylist team put them to the test…

The momentum of CBD has been growing for some time now. First it made its way into food and drink, and then it began to trickle into the beauty industry.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is the non-psychoactive part of the marijuana plant. It’s known for its healing, soothing and calming properties and is effective because we, as humans, have in-built receptors for cannabinoids. That means, when applied topically, it’s able to get to work straight away.

The ingredient first started being used within skincare products a couple of years ago (this is what happened when Stylist’s beauty editor only used CBD-infused products for a week), then it has slowly made its way into things like deodorant (that can help clear eczema) and has gradually been getting more and more popular since.

Now, CBD is being incorporated into facials up and down the country, and at the request this week’s guest editor Lily Allen, we sent her and three other Stylist team members to try them out.

Here’s how they got on…

The classic CBD facial

Tested by: Lily Allen, guest editor

What is it? A 45-minute facial that starts with a CBD-infused coffee. The treatment incorporates cleansing, a mask and an extended massage using CBD oils which help soothe skin. It promises to give dull skin a much-needed boost, leaving it looking healthy, glowing and radiant.

Our verdict: “I love a facial. I’d had a chemical peel the week before I went for this one and for some reason I had quite a bad reaction to it. My skin wasn’t flaking like it sometimes can after a more extreme peel, but my face was quite sore. CBD is known for its healing properties, and this facial really helped to soothe my skin and clear up the after-effects of the peel. The whole experience was very relaxing – it started off with a cleanse, there was some exfoliation and then the therapist applied the CBD oil. I enjoyed it and it really calmed my skin down.”

The cleansing CBD facial

Tested by: Meena Alexander, sub-editor

What is it? A cleansing and exfoliating facial with lymphatic drainage and microdermabrasion – a non-invasive procedure that helps remove layers of dead skin cells to reveal more radiant skin.

Our verdict: “CBD is said to have anti-inflammatory, soothing benefits, but I’ve always been sceptical. To begin, a cleanser, harsh exfoliator and 15-minute hyaluronic acid mask, all infused with hemp, left my skin feeling warm and very tingly. Then Kannaway Pure Gold Full Spectrum Hemp Oil was massaged into every nook and cranny of my face for 20 minutes, and it was pure bliss. Just as I was drifting off, a serum and moisturiser (more hemp) were smoothed onto my skin and I was presented with my before and after pictures: an undeniable rosy glow, smoother cheeks than I’ve had since the age of five and a drowsily content smile in the latter. Sold.”

The sensitive skin CBD facial

Tested by: Helen Bownass, entertainment director

What is it? An anti-inflammatory version of the signature Cowshed facial, it uses MariPharm’s CBD-infused cream. The aim is to help calm irritated, inflamed skin and address conditions like hormonal acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.

Our verdict: “I have little patches of eczema on my face and because I cycle a lot I get quite dry skin. So the treatment started with a really deep cleanse before the facalist had a thorough look at my skin and told me where some of the problem areas were. Next, she did a steam and extraction. Then the mask was put on, which was infused with CBD, before finishing with a facial massage and moisturiser. My skin felt lovely afterwards – calmer and softer – and although I don’t think it got rid of my eczema, I noticed my foundation has been much easier to apply. And it’s worth mentioning: that night, I slept so deeply.”

The tailored CBD facial

Tested by: Ava Welsing- Kitcher, junior beauty writer

What is it? Using entirely natural, vegan and cruelty-free products, this facial is billed as the UK’s first CBD facial tailored to your individual needs.

Our verdict: “Using handmade products, the facial started with a Himalayan salt scrub before deeply massaging my face, arms and neck with CBD oil. I slipped into a deep meditative state as lymphatic drainage techniques helped to gently push the oil deep into my skin. After a night cream, lip scrub and balm, I rose from the table and my skin felt smooth, soothed, and lit from within – plus, I was the most relaxed I’ve ever been after a facial. Usually my skin reacts to applied oil by producing more oil (and spots), but my skin was still on its best behaviour days later. For relaxation, de-stressing and nourishment, this facial definitely covers all corners.”

Everything You Need To Know About Our CBD Facial

By AMS Fulfillment

When we’re looking for a moment to rebalance, reset, and relax, we’re big fans of reaching for CBD. Its many benefits to both skin and mental health make it an obvious choice to add to our menu. We’re excited to educate you about everyone’s favorite wonder ingredient in our new CBD Facial.

What is CBD?

The short answer is that CBD is a molecule found in hemp. It’s like a best friend—it supports you, brings you back to balance when you’re getting a little flustered, and makes you better. The longer answer is that CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is an active molecule found in cannabis. CBD is just one of many cannabinoids found in the plant (there are over 100!). CBD oil is derived from the cannabis plant secretions, called trichomes.

Are hemp and weed (aka marijuana) the same thing?

No. While marijuana and hemp both contain CBD, marijuana contains over 0.3% THC, which is what gets you loopy. Hemp, on the other hand, contains less than 0.3% THC. Hemp is biodegradable, recyclable, and fibrous, which is what makes it great for making something like clothing. Marijuana is bushier and sprouts flowering buds, which is what you see in Seth Rogen movies.

Will you get high?

Nope! All of the Mowellens products in our CBD Facials are made from hemp-derived CBD, and won’t get you high. Nothing will come up on a drug test, you won’t smell like weed, and you won’t suddenly crave Cheetos. You will, however, feel your tension melt away, like when you get up from a good massage. Once the facial is over, you’ll realize just how tense the 42 muscles in your face have been.

What does CBD do?

CBD increases hydration and moisture, and helps diminish the appearance of longer-term concerns like lines and wrinkles. C BD is rich in antioxidants and naturally high (we had to) in vitamins A, D, and E. It’s also filled with essential fatty acids like omega 3 and G, which are important for the overall health and appearance of skin. CBD is a great addition to skincare routines focused on improving skin texture and diminishing puffiness. It even acts as an optimizer that amplifies the active ingredients of the other products you use, helping them penetrate deeper into the skin. We call it an optimizer for a reason.

How does CBD work its magic in our bodies?

CBD works with an understudied system in the body called the endocannabinoid. This system is made up of receptors located in areas like our brain, stomach, and central nervous system, which are responsible for maintaining our body’s proper function. Like a lock and key, CBD finds areas of the body where we are out of sync and brings the body back to homeostasis or balance.

What if you’re pregnant?

When CBD is administered in a topical setting, there isn’t enough THC entering the system to be a concern to those who are pregnant. However, if you have any questions, please consult a medical professional.

Can you be allergic to CBD?

As far as we know, no. CBD, in skincare or otherwise, is always accompanied by a carrier (oil, cream, or liquid), which may contain ingredients that you’re allergic to. Specific to the products we’re using in the CBD Facial, if you have an allergy to honey, avocado, almond, or coconut, we recommend skipping this experience or letting us substitute as needed. As with all allergy concerns, we do our very best to understand common allergies in our ingredients, but always consult a medical professional if you have any concerns.

Is CBD intended for everyday use?

CBD can be used every day, but as with everything, moderation is always good practice.

Can you use too much CBD?

Everyone responds to CBD differently. That said, it isn’t known to build up in your system so there isn’t a risk of “too much.” Start with a smaller dose, and increase as needed.

What techniques are used during the facial?

We using the same techniques that Heyday clients have come to love, but dialed up in certain parts to make the most impact. Some relaxing highlights include: CBD oils for massage and a special CBD honey mask that you’ll basically want to lick off your face (and technically can).

What is Mowellens?

Mowellens is a California-based CBD wellness company founded by Amy Duncan, who was the former Chief Operating Officer at a genetics lab and spent her time testing and studying pure cannabis products. In her personal life, she learned first hand about the benefits of cannabis, helping her husband after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. The mission began to combine her background in the healthcare and biotech industries to develop lab-tested, clean, natural, hemp-derived CBD products that provide results you can see and feel.

Her products and formulas are thoughtful from conception to creation. They’re 100% free from pesticides, additives, synthetic compounds, sulfates, phthalates, parabens, GMOs, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, artificial fragrances and colors, titanium dioxide, and residual solvents. That was a mouthful, but Amy has really put the work in to bring out the benefits of CBD and give consumers a truly pure experience.

Why did we choose Mowellens as our partner?

Mowellens’ dedication to creating the highest quality products, as well as consumer education, aligns with what we believe in at Heyday. There are so many brands out there with CBD products, but the scientific background that founder Amy Duncan brings to the table is unique.
