The legality of CBD oil in Missouri

Cannabidiol (CBD) products are often thought of as marijuana’s “kinder, gentler” cousins. Lacking the psychoactive high that comes along with the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in marijuana, CBD products won’t get you high — but they are being used to treat everything from epilepsy to chronic pain.

Thanks to a farm bill passed in 2018 by Congress , hemp products were carved apart from regular marijuana, which meant that CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are no longer considered a controlled substance. A similar law was passed in 2018 that exempted industrial hemp from Missouri’s definition of marijuana.

So what’s the problem? Sellers of CBD products can still end up being charged with drug distribution and other criminal offenses simply because of a lack of clarity in the law.

While CBD products have cropped up everywhere, it’s still against federal law to put CBD in food. It’s also illegal to claim that CBD products have health benefits of any kind — despite all of the evidence otherwise. Plus, the state’s laws only exempt industrial hemp products from its list of controlled substances — and CBD can be sourced from either hemp or marijuana.

Experts recommend that sellers be very cautious about their CBD products. The lack of clarity in the laws and the unwillingness of federal authorities to regulate the industry, combined with CBD’s rising popularity, has created a free-for-all in the market. There are a lot of unscrupulous suppliers out there who aren’t really invested in quality control of their products. A product on your store’s shelves could be labeled in a way that violates federal law (by saying that it can treat a medical condition) or it could contain more than 0.3% THC. (When researchers tested CBD products sold online, 43% of samples had more THC than it stated on their labels.)

If you’re charged with a drug crime (or several) related to CBD products , take immediate action to protect your rights and your future.

CBD Oil Missouri: Is Cbd Legal In Missouri & Where To Buy?

More and more Americans are using CBD to either improve their well-being or general health. The plant-based CBD has powerful treatment capabilities for specific conditions like depression, anxiety, epilepsy, insomnia, among others. It also improves the digestive system, skin, and organ health.

Missouri has the most significant number of CBD retailers in the United States and a rapid influx of vape shops around the state selling CBD products. However, Missouri CBD users are confronted with a seemingly complex contradictory legal framework as they try to find out whether or not use, and ownership of CBD is allowed in Missouri under state and federal law.

Is CBD Legal in Missouri?

Missouri was the 2 nd largest hemp producer behind Kentucky. Hemp cultivation in Missouri State can be traced back to 1835. In 1844, Missouri hemp farmers produced 12,500 tons of hemp.

However, back then, hemp was more labor-intensive than other crops, had less profit, and without slave labor by the end of the Civil war, hemp production had dropped off significantly.

In the 1930s, the “Reefer Madness” mentality was promoted by the US federal government to demonize cannabis, it lasted for decades, and Is still prevalent today. However, near the end of the 20 th century, states started to defy federal law by legalizing the use of weed for medicinal purposes, and things began to change.

However, it wasn’t until 2014 that Missouri started to catch on. At the time, the US government considered marijuana and hemp the same plant. Missouri lawmakers then created the Missouri Hemp Extract Registration Program in the same year to allow the use of low-THC hemp extract in treating intractable epilepsy and approving patients to purchase low-THC hemp extracts from ‘cannabidiol oil care centers’ regulated by the state.

The federal government also passed legislation at the end of 2014 that permitted state universities to implement hemp pilot programs to study further the processing and cultivation of hemp, which helped speed up the process.

The Missouri General Assembly then passed a measure in 2018 to remove hemp from marijuana definition. The Industrial Hemp Research Program was created to leverage the 2014 law, and universities in Missouri were allowed to plant hemp for a research basis, starting with the 2019 growing season.

The federal government then went a step further to legalize the commercial cultivation as well as the sale of hemp at the end of 2018. In July 2019, a bill was signed into law that made Missouri the 32 nd state to legalize medical marijuana. With time, Missouri might legalize marijuana as well, with ten marijuana legalization petitions being circulated to be added into the 2020 ballot.

To legally use CBD oil in Missouri, you should be approved by the MHERP to participate as a patient. Patients eligible to participate in this program are those diagnosed with intractable epilepsy.

Since August 3, 2019, Missouri started accepting licensed dispensary facility applications; hence patients or licensed caregivers can legally obtain and possess cannabis. However, the Missouri medical laws, patience below 18 years should have the consent of the parent or guardian to apply for a registration card, certified by their physician.

At the cost of $25, medical use and caregiver identification cards are available via the DHSS website. With the cards, purchases are restricted to state-licensed dispensaries. However, the use and possession of marijuana for recreational purposes is illegal in Missouri.

It is also illegal to consume marijuana in public spaces open to the general public like streets, sidewalks, businesses, schools, and parks. However, the state’s hemp laws don’t specify whether the use and possession of CBD oil are legal.

It seems like the Missouri law enforcement agencies have no interest in indicting those in possession of hemp-derived CBD because there are countless shops in the state that are already selling hemp CBD oil regardless of the gray areas in the law regarding CBD.

There are two sets of marijuana laws in Missouri – those concerning medical marijuana patients and everyone else. Medical marijuana patients are allowed to purchase CBD oil products with their cards at state-licensed dispensaries.

Should You Give Your Kid CBD?

More Americans are using the hemp (or marijuana) extract on their kids, but experts aren’t sold on its efficacy.

  • April 30, 2020

Priscilla Batista is stuck at home in Charlotte, N.C., with a highly emotional 4-year-old.“Every toddler obviously is emotional, but she’s a pretty constant, volatile child,” she said. “It doesn’t allow her to focus. She’s just struggling.” Batista doesn’t yet have an official diagnosis for her daughter, but, suspecting an attention deficit disorder, she has turned to CBD (cannabidiol) for help.

CBD is one of the more well-known components of cannabis, along with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Both chemicals affect the brain, but while THC makes users feel high, CBD doesn’t, though it does make some users feel more relaxed. CBD products have become hugely popular around the world, from oils that can be eaten or rubbed on skin, to soaps, gummy candies and even pet treats.

A 2019 Gallup poll found 14 percent of more than 2,500 Americans surveyed use CBD products, mostly for pain, anxiety and sleep problems. Statistics for kids are much harder to come by, but there are Facebook groups with thousands of followers where parents discuss giving CBD to their kids for conditions including the autism spectrum and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In April, a cannabis-focused magazine published a survey of more than 500 parents and found that 40 percent had given CBD products to their children for behaviors related to the autism spectrum.

Very little controlled research has been done with CBD and kids. There is only one approved drug based on CBD for any age group, and that’s for rare kinds of epilepsy in children. There are promising hints — but little proof thus far — that the compound might work on some other conditions in children too, including other kinds of seizures, autism and anxiety.

“When you’re desperate, you want options,” said John Mitchell, clinician at Duke ADHD Clinic in Durham, N.C. “I’m a parent myself. I get it.” But, he cautioned, for now the enthusiasm is running ahead of the science. “I’m very hesitant to say anything promising about it. It’s an open question.”

The medical community considers pure CBD relatively safe: The World Health Organization, for example, has said there’s no evidence of anyone abusing CBD recreationally, or of any public health problems. But there are still some risks, especially for kids.

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration wrote that CBD has the potential to cause liver injury (in users of any age), and suggested it might affect the developing brains of children. No one knows the long-term effects of giving CBD to kids, said Arno Hazekamp, Ph.D., a pharmaceutical researcher and cannabis consultant in the Netherlands. “Those kids are still kids,” he said. Researchers will have to wait until they are older to assess long-term effects. Also, since most CBD products aren’t regulated, he added, they can be tainted with dangerous additives.

Hints of help

The only drug containing CBD that has been approved for adults or children is Epidiolex, which is currently the only known treatment for two rare and devastating forms of childhood epilepsy: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Epidiolex, approved in 2018, was developed after the high-profile case of Charlotte Figi, whose desperate mother used CBD to dramatically control her debilitating seizures.

The way that CBD acts on the brain makes it a good candidate for controlling seizures caused by other conditions too. The Epilepsy Foundation said that early evidence from animal studies, anecdotal reports and small clinical trials suggest that CBD could potentially help with seizures. Dozens of trials are underway to test if, why and how CBD might work for kids and adults suffering from seizures of various kinds.

There are also hints CBD might work for some autistic kids. Dr. Gal Meiri, M.D., clinical director of the National Autism Research Center of Israel at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, has studied CBD oils and autism. In a study that Meiri co-authored in 2019, 155 autistic kids aged 18 years and younger tried CBD oil for at least six months. More than 80 percent of the parents reported significant or moderate improvement in their kids. “Some of the parents reported benefits not just with seizures but also behaviors, like self-harm,” he noted.

Most such studies are based on parents’ perceptions, rather than measured changes in comparison to placebo groups. The placebo effect can be strong, since parents typically want to see improvements. A placebo-controlled trial of CBD for autistic children has been completed at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Israel, but the results aren’t yet published. Another is underway at the University of California, San Diego.

“I’m trying to be very cautious about it,” said Meiri with regards to CBD and autism. “We still don’t have enough research about safety and efficacy.”

Similarly, many parents are trying CBD products for children with A.D.H.D., for which there are no reported controlled trials with kids. One small trial on 30 adults with a mouth spray containing both CBD and THC had inconclusive results.

With no scientific proof that CBD works and is safe for children, Mitchell said stimulant-based medications like Adderall are a better option than CBD. “We know much more about one than the other, so the choice is simple,” he said. But he understands why a parent might consider CBD as an alternative, he said, given that it is typically seen as a gentle drug with few side effects.

That matches Batista’s experience. “My daughter has a beautiful personality; she’s sweet, she’s spunky. I don’t want to medicate her with something that’s going to turn her into a zombie,” she said, referring to parent complaints that some stimulant-based drugs can make their kids seem spacey.

“I don’t want her to fall behind,” she said. Batista has seen other kids with A.D.H.D. struggle academically. “It can really swallow a kid whole; then you have a failure to launch.”

Mitchell added there are signs CBD might help with anxiety: a symptom that sometimes accompanies autism and A.D.H.D. In a 2018 study of CBD for kids with autism, for example, anxiety improved in more than a third of the 60 patients.

Surprisingly, there’s not much evidence that CBD helps with sleep — despite its reputation for causing drowsiness in recreational users. “Something can make you sleepy and have no effect on your sleep quality,” said Hazekamp.

No silver bullets

Even if CBD is someday approved for use against other kinds of seizures, autism or A.D.H.D., it is unlikely to work for everyone.

Kelly Cervantes, a mother and health activist in Chicago, gave CBD to her daughter Adelaide, who suffered from an unidentified neurodegenerative condition with severe infantile spasms. “We were desperate, and we wanted to try anything we could,” said Cervantes. That was when her daughter was about a year and a half old, and before Epidiolex, so she says she got the product online rather than though her doctor. Sadly, Adelaide’s symptoms got worse. “It entirely depends on the child. There is no one pill, one oil, one treatment that is going to cure everyone,” she said.

In addition, Adelaide’s doctors began to see signs of liver failure. Cervantes took her off the CBD. She said CBD, “does not come without side effects, which I think is a major misconception about it.” In trials of Epidiolex, a moderate dose caused side effects in at least 10 percent of the children, including elevated liver enzymes, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fatigue, sleep problems and malaise.

Furthermore, it’s impossible to know what’s in a CBD product without independent testing. One of Hazekamp’s studies in the Netherlands analyzed 46 cannabis oils made by patients or sold online. Only 21 products even advertised the ingredient concentrations and many of those were wildly wrong. Seven didn’t contain any cannabinoids at all. One of them had more than 50 percent more THC in it than the product claimed.

“There can be pesticides, heavy metals and microbes in the plants,” said Hazekamp. It isn’t clear if those are making it into CBD oils, he said.

It’s impossible to overdose on pure CBD, but synthetic knock-offs can be poisonous. In 2019, the American Association of Poison Control Centers put out an alert noting “growing concern” about CBD products, with national calls about CBD rocketing from just over 100 in 2017 to more than 1,500 last year.

“The labels aren’t always right,” said Hazekamp. “If you try it, make sure it is what you think it is.”

Talk to your doctor

When Cervantes tried CBD, she bought it online from what she believed to be a reputable company, but she can’t be sure what was in it. It would help parents of suffering children, she said, if CBD products were more regulated and parents felt they could talk to their doctors about it, rather than worrying about its association with marijuana.

“I had a patient start taking CBD and I only found out a month in,” said Mitchell. “Parents may assume that a doctor will respond in a negative way.” It’s a doctor’s responsibility, he said, to be open to discussing options. “If you shut a patient down, it doesn’t mean you won the argument, it means they’re not going to talk about it.”

Batista said her daughter’s doctors told her to be careful with CBD and didn’t recommend it.

Still, she’s been using it for several months, getting it from a company that advertises independent testing to confirm their product’s contents, and starting with a low dose. She said she can’t tell if it’s doing anything, but holds out hope that a gentle drug with few side effects will be effective for her little girl. “I want to think that it’s helping.”

Is CBD Oil Safe for Kids?

Some parents are using CBD oil to treat seizures, pain, and even autism in their kids. Before you try it, learn the facts.

You’ve probably seen chatter online about cannabidiol oil, a.k.a. CBD oil. Its popularity is growing as a remedy for issues like chronic pain, anxiety, and side effects from cancer treatments. Some parents even say giving their child the oil has helped with autism and seizure disorders. But is trying it wise—or even legal?

First things first: Though it’s derived from cannabis, CBD oil is not the same as recreational marijuana (or medical marijuana) and doesn’t contain meaningful amounts of THC, the compound in marijuana that produces a “high”. The oil, which is not physically addictive, is typically taken as a liquid under the tongue, via gel capsule, or as a cream. It can also be mixed with food.

CBD is thought to work on something in the body called the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in maintaining homeostasis, or balance. There are receptors for this system in many parts of the body, including the brain, which is why it’s believed to help a host of different conditions.

The most research done on CBD is for its use with seizure disorders like epilepsy. “The body of evidence that it’s effective for other disorders is much less,” says Jennifer Lowry, MD, Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health and Chief of Medical Toxicology at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. For other conditions, the evidence is largely anecdotal. “Cannabis is still classified as a Schedule 1 drug in the U.S., so it can’t be researched as well,” explains Janice Bissex, a registered dietitian who became a Holistic Cannabis Practitioner after seeing how cannabis relieved her father’s pain. She works with many clients who have seen positive results with CBD oil but cautions that it “doesn’t work for every person every time.”

If you’re wondering whether it could help your child, find someone knowledgeable to consult. “I typically advise people to check with their child’s doctor,” says Bissex, noting that in some cases, the oil may interact with certain medications. “But there are many doctors who are not educated in the use of CBD for various conditions in kids so you may need to broaden your search.” Lowry noted that pediatric neurologists may be more familiar with it. Finding a “cannabis consultant” such as Bissex is also an option for figuring out the right dosing, which varies for each person.

The most common negative side effects of CBD are drowsiness and dry mouth, but these often go away after a couple of weeks.

Keep in mind that CBD oil can be pricey because of the cost in growing the plants and extracting the oil. The FDA doesn’t regulate CBD oil, so it’s buyer beware. Bissex recommends choosing products that have been independently tested, so you’re sure they contain the amount of CBD they claim. Lowry, who says she personally can’t recommend CBD because there is no safety or efficacy data on it yet, suggests finding out how much THC (if any) the product contains before giving it to a child. “Many current laws limit it to 0.9 percent,” says Lowry. “I would go as low as possible.”

As for whether CBD is legal, that’s still a bit fuzzy. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), these states have approved legislation allowing its use: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Other states have legalized recreational marijuana: Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington plus D.C. Some states allow CBD oil as long as it’s derived from hemp, but not from marijuana.

It’s probably safe to say that the DEA has bigger fish to fry than a parent buying a bottle of CBD oil for their child’s medical condition. But to err on the safe side, choose a product made from hemp.

Davenport residents love to keep themselves physically active as can be seen daily at any of the 50 plus parks and facilities located in the city limits which include 20 miles of paths for walking or biking.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol, is one of the primary natural cannabinoids found in the industrial hemp plant. What are cannabinoids? They are chemical compounds that bind the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) receptors throughout your brain and body.

Cannabinoid receptors are embedded in cell membranes throughout your body. Researchers have identified two cannabinoid receptors: CB-1, predominantly present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands, and organs. CB-2, predominantly found in the immune system and its associated structures.

The top brands like Green Unicorn Farms, have some of the best CBD products on the market, and the company regularly tests its flower for consistency and legal compliance.

What Is the Best CBD Hemp Flower?

Depending on what you desire from a CBD-rich flower, your preference in strains may vary. You may want one product for daytime use and another to help you relax before bed.

If you’re new to smoking CBD flower, a sample pack that includes multiple strains could be the best starting point.

10 Best Hemp Strains

The following CBD flower strains range from uplifting to relaxing. Each of these CBD products has a unique terpene profile to encourage specific effects, and most have a reasonably high CBD content as well as other cannabinoids for a rounded experience.

1. Special Sauce

This strain has exceptionally high CBD content plus additional cannabinoids and terpenes for a potent effect. It’s best for nighttime and relaxation and will help you completely unwind while letting go of the day’s problems. 4. Hawaiian Haze

Frequent users will love this slightly less CBD-rich strain for its energy-boosting benefits. 5. Bubba Kush

A pungent robust indica strain, Bubba Kush is a reigning favorite for those ready for the day to kick down into low gear. It’s the ideal way to get straight into chill territory for a blissful evening of enjoyment.

Bubba Kush is a hefty bud with deep purple shading and bright orange outer hairs. A cross between an indica strain and legendary pre-98 Bubba, it has 16.4% CBD and 19.8% total cannabinoids.

6. Frosted Kush

This strain has a lower concentration of CBD than Bubba Kush but a higher grouping of additional cannabinoids, providing a smooth, strong finish to your day. Plenty of potent terpenes work to keep your mind clear and focused, making this a top pick for evenings when you want to socialize and stay somewhat active. The sweet and sour flavor of Frosted Kush is intriguing and enjoyable, with hints of berries dueling with a sharper, almost skunky aroma.

Frosted Kush is a light green, machine-trimmed flower with a little extra leaf. A cross between Frosted Lime and Kush Hemp E., it has 12% CBD and 12.7% total cannabinoids.

Juicy Fruit is a yellow and green bud with orange outer hairs. An Afghani Indica and Thai Sativa descendant, it has 18.3% CBD and 22.7% total cannabinoids.

How Does It Feel to Smoke CBD Flower?

Most people associate smoking cannabis with being high, but smoking CBD hemp flower is a different type of experience. THC is the cannabinoid most associated with a feeling of intoxication and is also the culprit when it comes to reports of “getting the munchies.

”Legal CBD flower sourced from hemp shouldn’t have more than a trace amount of THC, so it won’t cause what most people refer to as a “cannabis high.”

How Does CBD Hemp Flower Make You Feel?

How you feel when smoking CBD-rich hemp flower will depend in large part on the products you choose. Some strains will make you feel relaxed and sleepy, while others can make you feel motivated and focused. Most buds fall into either “daytime” or “nighttime” use, although a few are suitable for smoking day or night.

CBD doesn’t typically make you hungry; in fact, it can even reduce your appetite. Some people report that smoking certain CBD hemp strains before eating helps them maintain portion control.

You can experiment with different CBD strains until you find one that gives you the experience you prefer. Some people claim certain CBD flower strains can produce a “whole-body high,” but a better description is “an overall sense of well-being.” Others just give a mild sense of serenity, so be sure to consider your goals before rushing into a purchase.

One of the top aspects of CBD flower is the wide range of strains and flavors you can sample. Different strains have different terpene profile. Terpenes control taste and aroma, giving you chocolate, citrus, berry, pine, or other flavors as you inhale and exhale.

Is it Legal to Smoke Hemp?

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the sale and consumption of hemp in all 50 states. “Hemp” is defined as a plant with less than 0.3 THC content as a percentage of the flower’s dry weight. Anything with a higher percentage of THC is considered “marijuana,” and is subject to federal laws controlling cannabis.

As long as your flower comes from legal hemp that doesn’t contain more than 0.3% THC by dry weight, it’s legal to smoke. You can help ensure your CBD flower comes in under the legal limit by buying from a reputable grower. If you buy online, make sure the seller has their flower regularly tested by a third party to ensure it’s legal.

Other cannabinoids, like CBG, aren’t controlled. Some users find CBG flower to be even more effective than CBD, but natural levels of CBG in hemp are typically low. You can get a high CBD concentration in legal hemp flower and enjoy an extra boost from added CBG or other cannabinoids.

Does CBD Hemp Flower Cause a Positive Drug Test?

The trace amount of THC allowed by law in hemp flower strains and other CBD products won’t show up on most drug tests. Be aware that tests do exist that can pick up tiny amounts of THC. You may be worried if your job depends on passing frequent drug tests, especially if you don’t know the test’s type or sensitivity.

In general, CBD flower with trace amounts of THC can’t impair you. To accumulate enough in your system for a positive drug test, you’d have to smoke an estimated three to six entire grams of flower containing the legal percentage of 0.3 THC. You’d probably fall asleep long before reaching that threshold.

Bottom line: There is a very slight chance of returning a positive drug test even if there is only a trace of THC in your CBD flower. It all depends on the testing protocol. You’ll have to research the strain and your company’s policies to see if the risk is worth it.

Benefits of Smoking CBD Hemp Flower

Depending on individual strains and CBD content, the hemp flower you smoke can provide the following benefits.

Inexpensive Relaxation

While CBD products do not come cheap, they aren’t as expensive as some habits. You can buy bud in bulk and enjoy rich hemp every evening. Compared to the price of a decent bottle of wine, you’ll likely come out ahead.

Mood Regulation

You can rely on the right CBD-rich hemp choice to help you unwind after a long day. Choose a high-CBD flower with an entourage of other cannabinoids to smooth the rough edges off your mood.

Fast Acting Effects

One of the best things about smoking CBD flower is how fast it can go to work. Edibles and topicals can take time to kick in, but smoking gets CBD into your bloodstream quickly. You’ll start feeling the effects within minutes or even seconds.

Pain Relief

Many hemp users say products that contain CBG and CBD flowers help them with pain thought that is not yet clinically proven. Hemp could be a good alternative for over-the-counter medications or prescription opioids. You might have to experiment a little to find a combination that works well for you. You may also want to speak with a doctor before getting started.

It’s also important to state that CBD is fairly young as on the legal market so there are not a lot of long studies that have been completed. Evidence at this point falls into the anecdotal category.

High Bioavailability

Bioavailability is a term used to describe a product that your body can easily access. By smoking hemp, you can access roughly half of its total CBD content. In contrast, eating edible products only lets you access about 20% of the CBD since your digestive system acts as a filter.

The Entourage Effect

When you smoke CBD flower, you can also reap the benefits of other cannabis compounds besides CBD. The best CBD-rich strains contain a total amount of cannabinoids that is greater than the CBD alone. Your hemp flower’s terpene profile plus these additional cannabinoids produce a more substantial effect than CBD alone.

Neither recreational CBD nor CBG flower intends to diagnose/treat/cure or prevent any disease. If you’re purchasing CBD or CBG flower online, always make sure you’re buying from a reputable grower who sells high-quality, lab-tested flower products.

Evaluating CBD Hemp Strains for Growing

CBD to THC Ratios

The question that needs to be answered about hemp strains & genetics is:”What percentage of CBD should be present when the THC percentage approaches the legal limit for this industrial hemp strain?” By testing for a strain’s CBD to THC ratio the answer to the question can be approximated with enough precision to confidently put a high CBD industrial hemp growing plan in place. It allows hemp seed selection with a good level of insight as to how it will perform.

Our research indicates that a cannabis strain’s CBD to THC ratio remains relatively stable throughout its growth cycle. Of course the same growing condition variables outlined on the home page can influence these ratio values too. Cannabis has proven to be an unbelievably vital species that is constantly adapting to its environment. When growing & processing feminized hemp, the quality and quantity of a grower’s harvest will depend on latitude, the nutrient program, weather conditions, soil composition and quality, attention and care during growth – plus any other considerations that could be called good growing techniques. After that, the timing of the harvest and the methods for processing, drying and storing or processing of the flower will determine the final quality and quantity of oil.

At this early stage in the industry, strains are not developed for different latitudes or weather conditions. Cheyenne Mountain Seed Company is a high CBD hemp seed supplier , and therefore our strains are hybrids of cannabis sativa and cannabis indica, like any other high CBD hemp strain. They will grow vigorously in Florida as well as Maine. For each latitude, the feminized hemp seeds would have to be germinated and vegetated at the proper time of year for a favorable amount of time to a determined stage of size and development, then planted in the field under favorable conditions. All of that is the grower’s responsibility.

Beyond that, as far as medical values go, a strain should be selected based on its full cannabinoid profile as well as its terpenoid profile.

The small table to the right illustrates the way a lab will typically report cannabinoid test results. This particular test from a nearly mature Mountain Mango plant showed a CBD to THC ratio of 34:1 (9.35/0.27). Results when growing and processing feminized hemp will vary based on growing conditions, including field irrigation . Growers report ratios of 27:1 to 35:1 in the field for our proprietary strain.

Mountain Mango Hanging In the Rafters

Total Cannabinoids
Analyte Total*
THC 0.27%
CBD 9.35%
CBG 0.23%
CBC 0.92%
CBDV 0.22%

Knowing the CBD to THC ratio of the strains being planted and the consequent maximum CBD percentage yield possible under the law, rational business plans can be made. The amount of CBD produced can be calculated if the expected dried flower yield per plant is accurate. A simple formula: dried flower weight yield per plant X number of plants X tested CBD percentage = CBD yield. 100 plants with dry weight of 2 lbs. each testing at 7% CBD will yield 14 lbs of CBD in the extracted oil.

When growing and processing feminized hemp, the processing or extraction method that is used to process your crop will determine the actual product that will be sold. In our opinion, high quality crops should be extracted with a state of the art ethanol extraction system, this will yield the purest full-spectrum oil. It will be about 80-85% CBD, the other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids make up the rest of the yield (assuming the extractor removed the unwanted waxes, lipids and chloryphyll). In the above example, the 100 plants would yield around 16.5 lbs of full-spectrum oil, about 7.5 kilos or 7.5 liters (kilos and liters are pretty much equal for oil).

Timing is Everything

The trick in growing & processing feminized hemp seed is knowing when to harvest each strain in the field. It’s the difference between success and a complete wipe out (regulator mandated crop destruction).

Whatever merits or pitfalls the current industrial hemp regulations possess, federal or state, as growers we are obliged to fully comply with them. Now, it’s all about the testing.

The only way to know when to harvest any strain in the field is to test, test, test. Simply put, when the THC level tests close to the legal limit, harvest the strain. All the nuances beyond that are up to the individual grower; how long to wait, how many tests to perform, how to gather your samples, how many days it will take to harvest the strain, etc.

Before getting started, we recommend you read our pre-flower cultivation information for optimal growing conditions.

Hemp Strains & Genetics: The CBD to THC Ratio Table

The table to the right shows the calculated CBD percentage of a hypothetical hemp test sample when the THC level reaches 0.3% for the following CBD to THC ratios.

As an example, for a strain to yield a 15% CBD percentage in the field at 0.3% THC, its CBD to THC ratio would have to test around 50:1, extremely high and rare!

cbd oil tremors

What Is Essential Tremor – And Can CBD Oil Help?

Essential tremor, sometimes referred to as ET, is a condition that affects around 7 million Americans and millions more the world over. ET affects up to 1% of the general population, and up to 5% of people aged over 65.

Despite how common ET is, there is yet to be any cure, and there are currently very few treatment options available.

Some have proposed that CBD oil could offer potential relief to those suffering from essential tremor. This article will explore this possibility in-depth.

What Is an Essential Tremor?

Essential tremor is a nervous system (neurological) disorder. It is characterized by involuntary and rhythmic shaking, which can occur in any part of the body. It most commonly occurs in the hands when performing simple tasks like drinking from a glass or tying shoelaces.

The tremors are similar to Parkinson’s disease symptoms, which often leads to ET being confused with Parkinson’s. Some of the key differences between the two conditions are:

  • The timing of the tremors

With ET, the tremors usually occur when the affected person is using their hands. However, with Parkinson’s disease, these tremors or shakes arise when they are inactive. Parkinson’s hand tremors are most prominent when they are by the person’s side or resting on their lap.

  • Posture and movement

Some people with ET develop ataxia, which means that they no longer have full control over their bodily movements. As a result, people with ataxia often have an unsteady gait.

On the other hand, people with Parkinson’s disease often have a shuffling gait. Other associated symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include slow motion and having a stooped posture.

  • Similarities in parts of the body affected by both conditions

ET mainly affects the hands, head, voice, and legs. With Parkinson’s disease, these tremors usually start in the hands. However, they can also impact the legs and chin.

Symptoms of Essential Tremor

Essential tremor signs and symptoms:

  • Begin gradually, usually more prominently on one side of the body
  • Worsen with movement
  • They usually occur in the hands first, affecting one or both hands
  • Can include a “yes-yes” or “no-no” motion of the head
  • Emotional stress, fatigue, caffeine or temperature extremes may aggravate this condition

Upward and downward movements characterize ET in the hands. These tremors can also affect the arms, head, eyelids, and larynx (voice box), which results in a shaky voice.

Essential tremor symptoms can be challenging to detect, as they tend to start discreetly and worsen over time.

People should not confuse essential tremor with what doctors consider to be a physiologic tremor. Many people have a slight tremor only when performing specific tasks, which is entirely reasonable and nothing of concern. Factors such as caffeine, stress, smoking, and tiredness can bring on a physiologic tremor.

What Causes an Essential Tremor?

One risk factor for ET is age. Essential tremor is much more common in people aged 40 and older. And as already mentioned, ET affects up to 5% of people aged over 65.

The other main risk factor is a genetic mutation. The inherited cause of ET is due to it being an autosomal dominant disorder. This means that only one parent needs to have the defective gene for their children to inherit it. Research shows that if one parent has the defective gene, then children have a 50% chance of developing the condition.

What Treatments Are Available to Those with Essential Tremor?

There is currently no cure for essential tremors. Treatment is limited to medication or deep brain stimulation surgery in extreme cases. While there is no medication capable of completely removing the symptoms of essential tremor, some can reduce their severity. Some commonly prescribed medications include:

  • Primidone (anti-seizure drug)
  • Beta-blockers
  • Gabapentin
  • Topiramate

Could CBD Oil Help Reduce an Essential Tremor?

Cannabis research is ongoing and focuses on its potential in addressing a plethora of medical symptoms. Many states across America now have laws allowing cannabis use in some form.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the most heavily researched compounds of the marijuana plant. CBD could potentially be hugely significant in mitigating a host of disease-related symptoms in the future.

Research has shown that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and is a patented neuroprotectant. It also displays other promising benefits.

The FDA has also acknowledged CBD’s medicinal benefits for certain types of seizures. The epilepsy drug Epidiolex is the first-ever CBD-based drug the administration has approved.

Despite the level of research into CBD, there is still minimal research into cannabis for essential tremor.

Current Research into CBD for Essential Tremor

Despite encouraging research into CBD for other conditions with similar symptoms, experts are no closer to adding essential tremor to the list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana.

However, there has been a recent breakthrough for the industry as researchers at the University of California San Diego are currently researching the area.

They are conducting a study that will look at the effectiveness and safety of a cannabis formulation for helping ET.

The researchers estimate that approximately sixteen participants with ET would take part in the study. All participants undergo a complete neurological examination and psychological testing as part of the study.

The participants take an oral cannabis formulation with a CBD to THC ratio of 20:1. Upon completion of a particular dosage of the cannabis formulation for two weeks, participants taper off. After a washout period, they then cross to an alternate study arm.

The study will take approximately one year to complete. The researchers will use various types of validated tremor rating measures in the study. As well as quantifying tremor severity, the researchers will assess the safety and tolerability of the cannabis formulation.

Final Thoughts on CBD Oil for Essential Tremor

The research occurring at the University of California San Diego is hugely crucial for sufferers of ET and the cannabis industry as a whole. This will be the first time that scientists have looked to the plant for its effectiveness in calming essential tremors symptoms.

The results of the study could potentially have a life-changing impact on people with ET. A positive outcome would likely pave the way for further clinical studies using cannabinoids.

There has not been much research done on the potential effects of CBD for essential tremor. However, we are expecting this to soon change.

CBD Oil for Parkinson’s: Can It Help? Maybe, According to Research

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound found in cannabis plants. These compounds are known as cannabinoids. Cannabis has several hundred of these compounds, though only a few are well known and widely studied.

CBD doesn’t have the psychoactive benefits of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabis’s more famous cannabinoid. It does, however, have other potentially beneficial effects.

Research suggests CBD may help reduce anxiety, relieve pain, and offer neuroprotective properties.

Potential brain and nervous system benefits have garnered a lot of attention in recent years, especially for people with neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease (PD).

The research is fairly new and limited, but some studies have shown promise for those with PD. Let’s look at how CBD might help with symptoms of this progressive neurological disorder.

CBD hasn’t been used in people with Parkinson’s disease long-term, and research into the benefits of this cannabinoid only began a few decades ago.

That means research is limited, and often, the studies that have been done are very small. Scientists and doctors need to conduct larger-scale efforts to confirm any benefits.

However, some studies suggest CBD may have some positive effects, especially when it comes to nonmotor symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

A small study of 22 individuals with Parkinson’s found that using cannabis helped improve pain. However, this study was conducted with medical marijuana, which contains both CBD and THC.

But animal studies have suggested CBD alone has benefits for reducing pain and inflammation, two factors that can affect people with PD regularly.

Tremors

Some of the most common treatments for Parkinson’s disease can cause medicine-related tremors or uncontrolled muscle movements. Treatment with the medicine won’t make it better — and it could make it worse.

As a possible solution, an older, smaller study has suggested that CBD may be able to help ease these muscle movements.

Psychosis

Psychosis is a possible complication of Parkinson’s disease. It can cause hallucinations, delirium, and delusions, and it’s more common in people in the later stages of the disease.

In fact, up to 50 percent of people with PD experience this complication.

While medications are available to treat Parkinson’s psychosis, some people have wondered if CBD might be beneficial.

One small 2009 study in individuals with Parkinson’s disease and psychotic symptoms found that the compound did reduce the severity of symptoms. It also didn’t cause any adverse effects.

Sleep

Sleep disruption and a lack of quality sleep is a serious concern for people with Parkinson’s disease. Vivid dreams or nightmares, as well as movement during sleep, is common.

Studies have found that both cannabis and CBD alone might help with sleep disturbances.

Quality of life

Because of the many potential benefits of CBD for people with Parkinson’s, researchers have suggested using the compound might help improve quality of life. This is a major concern for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.

One study found that people who had Parkinson’s disease and no psychiatric symptoms or conditions experienced an improved quality of life with CBD use. This study, too, was done in a very small group of people, so further research is needed to thoroughly support the findings.

There are no FDA-approved cannabis treatments for Parkinson’s disease. However, the FDA did approve a CBD medication, Epidiolex, to treat two rare types of epilepsy.

Researchers from the University of Colorado are using that drug to investigate its benefits on people with Parkinson’s-related tremor. The study is in its second phase.

However, this too is a small study, conducted in just 10 people. Larger studies will be needed to confirm or refute what this study ultimately finds.

Researchers have found that CBD may be able to help prevent Parkinson’s disease, but currently, research has only been done in animals.

Plus, the research suggests CBD can do nothing to help treat PD once it begins. Based on this, it may only be useful as a preventive measure.

But human studies that analyzed whether CBD could help prevent Parkinson’s didn’t return significant results. More research is needed to understand why the compound might protect animals’ brains but — so far as we can tell — not human brains.

One thing to keep in mind is that by the time an individual begins showing signs of Parkinson’s disease, about 60 percent of the dopamine-receptive neurons in the brain are already destroyed. Most clinical trials only use CBD after a diagnosis is made.

It’s difficult to know who will develop Parkinson’s and who will not. Preventive strategies are few and far between, so knowing who could benefit from CBD prevention measures is difficult.

If you’re a beginner with CBD, you may be curious about the best way to take it if you have Parkinson’s disease.

CBD is available in the following forms:

  • Oils and tinctures. As liquids, these forms of CBD can be swallowed or absorbed sublingually (under the tongue). This might be a good option if you have difficulty swallowing pills or chewing gummies.
  • Lotions and creams. The effects of CBD-infused lotions and creams can take several hours to develop, but may be useful to treat pain or stiffness in hands and joints.
  • Capsules and pills. You may experience a delay in effects if you take CBD in a capsule or pill, but this form may be ideal for people with tremors that prevent them from properly dosing a liquid.
  • Edibles.Gummies are a popular CBD option. You can also find CBD in a number of other edible foods, though dosage may not be as accurate as in other forms. Edibles discretely deliver a dose of CBD.
  • Vape pens. CBD oil can be vaporized and inhaled. The effects begin quickly if you use this route. However, vaping may damage lung tissue or aggravate symptoms like coughing or sore throat.

In most studies, CBD is tolerated well. It rarely causes side effects, and the ones that do happen tend to be mild. They include tiredness, changes in appetite, and diarrhea or nausea.

However, CBD can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications. Talk to your doctor before taking CBD, especially if you’re on medications that contain a “grapefruit warning.” CBD and grapefruit have a similar effect on certain enzymes related to drug metabolism.

Remember, there’s an established treatment for Parkinson’s disease — but it’s not perfect.

Levodopa is the most effective and most commonly used treatment for PD. This medication helps replenish the level of dopamine in the brain.

Levodopa addresses many of the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. That includes tremors or muscle stiffness.

However, this medicine does little to tackle the nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. These are the symptoms that can dramatically affect a person’s quality of life. They include anxiety, depression, and sleep quality.

What’s more, prolonged use of levodopa may cause side effects like agitation, anxiety, confusion, and nausea. It may also cause a type of tremor that’s the result of the medication itself, not PD.

CBD appears to be best suited to address those nonmotor issues and potential side effects, rather than motor issues. One study with more than 200 people found that that use of cannabis had a high effectiveness on nonmotor symptoms. However, this study included THC with CBD, not CBD alone.

CBD holds some promise for people with Parkinson’s disease. Not only might the cannabinoid ease symptoms of the degenerative disease itself, it might ease side effects of the most common treatment.

But it’s important to remember that many of these studies are quite small. Larger, more in-depth studies are necessary before CBD gets the go-ahead from many doctors and the FDA. Yet, the results have been promising, so there’s reason to be optimistic for future research.

Some doctors are becoming more open to CBD as a complementary treatment, so talk to your doctor about what you’re experiencing and how to get relief using CBD or other methods.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.

The idea of using CBD oil for Parkinson's disease isn't a new one, but more research needs to be done. We'll take a look at what promising study results are out there.

how to tell if cbd oil is bad

Does CBD oil expire?

  1. How long does CBD oil last?
  2. Does CBD oil go bad?
  3. What is the best way to store CBD oil?

A bottle of high-quality CBD oil can be expensive, and if you’re like us, you want to make that liquid gold last as long as possible. If you’re only using a few drops a day, it could be many months or even a year before you use up the entire bottle. Which might leave you asking yourself, “Does CBD oil expire?”

Here are answers to some common questions about CBD longevity, including how to extend the shelf life of CBD oil.

How long does CBD oil last?

The general rule of thumb is that CBD oil has a shelf life ranging from 14 months to two years, depending on how the product is stored. Direct sunlight and intense heat are two factors that can cause a bottle of CBD oil to go bad before its expiration date. Higher-quality products tend to last longer, especially those that have been minimally processed like full-spectrum CBD oil. Pure CBD oil may last longer than flavored oils since any added ingredients have a shelf life of their own that could be shorter than the shelf life of the CBD.

It’s also a good idea to be aware of what extraction process was used to make the product. Many cannabis experts agree that the CO2 method is best for producing premium oil that stays potent longer because the hemp or cannabis compounds remain stable during this type of extraction. Other methods may destabilize the compounds, potentially creating a lower-quality bottle of CBD oil with a shorter shelf life.

Any CBD product — whether it’s top-shelf or bargain-priced — should have an expiration date clearly printed on the label. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires such labeling for consumer protection, so steer clear of any CBD products (or any products for that matter) that are not in compliance.

Does CBD oil go bad?

CBD oil can lose its potency if stored improperly or kept for longer than two years. Weak CBD oil means that the cannabinoids have broken down and don’t function at peak levels in the body. So, an older bottle is less likely to deliver any of the potential therapeutic effects of CBD oil, such as pain relief.

How do I know if CBD oil has gone bad?

The aroma and flavor of CBD oil may become unpleasant over time, transforming from earthy to skunky. You can also observe visual changes in the oil, which may turn cloudy over time. Likewise, the texture of CBD oil will change and the oil may appear thicker and lose its smooth consistency. Lastly, a change in color indicates that the CBD oil is no longer fresh.

Can old CBD oil make you sick?

CBD oil does not spoil or turn rancid like milk or other oils, so you are unlikely to become ill if you consume a small amount of the product past its prime. This is especially true if you are microdosing. But to be on the safe side, toss any bottles that have been improperly stored or sitting in your medicine cabinet for longer than two years.

What is the best way to store CBD oil?

Manufacturers know that cool, dark places are optimal for storing CBD oil, which is why many of the best products are packaged in glass bottles tinted green. Dark green bottles prevent damaging sunlight from penetrating and hastening the product’s expiration date. Refrigerating CBD oil is not necessary. In fact, the most favorable environment may just be room temperature, or 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

How can I make CBD oil last longer?

Here are some pointers to keep CBD oil fresh until the upper end of the shelf-life range (24 months):

  • Open the bottle only when in use, then reseal the cap tightly. Oxidation is a foe of CBD and will shorten the shelf life.
  • Keep CBD soft gels and capsules in their original bottle, ensuring that containers are consistently airtight.
  • Store bottles upright rather than horizontally.
  • Find the coolest, darkest place in your home to store CBD oils and tinctures. Drawers, cabinets, a pantry, and the cellar all make ideal CBD storage centers.
  • Try not to store your CBD in a room where you use a humidifier, as excessive moisture can encourage mold to form.
  • Do not store CBD oil near a window. Direct sunlight will accelerate the expiration date of any CBD product.
  • Keep CBD oil away from all warm places in your home, such as radiators and ovens. Likewise, don’t store CBD oil in your purse or pocket for long periods. Any warm place can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • If you’re using a spoon or a dropper to dole out the CBD, make sure the utensil is clean. Don’t “double dip” a spoon, as you can introduce harmful bacteria and contaminate the oil.

When it comes to keeping your CBD oil potent, Dr. Bonni Goldstein, a medical adviser to Weedmaps and director of Canna-Centers in Lawndale, California, sums it up best: “Shelf life for most products is about one year, although the storage conditions are important. Minimizing exposure to heat and light can help extend the shelf life.”

8 Signs Of A High-Quality CBD Oil

As CBD continues to increase in popularity, it’s essential to make sure the CBD you use is high-quality and comes from a reliable source. Keep reading to find out precisely what makes for a good, safe, and effective CBD oil.

How to tell if CBD oil is high-quality

1. Extracted using supercritical CO₂

The best CBD oils use safe solvents like supercritical CO₂ to extract the desired compounds. This ensures a safe extract is produced, free from any residues or additives—which is often not the case with other extraction methods.

Avoid CBD oils made using chemicals like propane, butane, pentane, or hexane as they can leave behind dangerous contaminants.

2. Produced using naturally grown hemp

Hemp is a “hyperaccumulator” plant. That fancy word simply means hemp readily absorbs everything from the soil it grows in. What it absorbs can be useful, like vitamins and minerals, or harmful, like lead, petroleum, and toxic chemicals.

The safest CBD oil will be sourced in an area where the government requires farmers to be certified and have their fields frequently tested for toxic substances. The oil itself should be tested by an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited lab. They’ll make sure it doesn’t contain pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, fungus, solvent residue, or any other foreign matter.

3. The price isn’t too good to be true

High-quality CBD oils aren’t cheap to make, so if the price is very low, that’s a good sign it’s made with inferior or contaminated raw materials, substandard solvents, or it doesn’t contain very much, if any, actual CBD.

You don’t have to buy the most expensive product on the market to be safe. Look for reasonable prices and favourable customer reviews.

4. The product label displays the amount of CBD

Good CBD oil made by a reputable company will tell you how much CBD you’re getting right on the label. Look for either the concentration or the total number of milligrams in the bottle. Higher numbers mean a more potent product. To be considered effective, CBD oils should contain 250–1000mg per 10ml bottle. Anything less and you’re wasting your money.

5. Independent test results

Before buying CBD oil, check to see if the company has its products verified by independent testing facilities. A company you can trust will make these results public. The information might be on the bottle, the box it came in, on an insert, or published on the website. If you can’t find it there, then it is time to start asking questions. Most companies with consistently good results are so proud of them that they’ll make the reports easy to find.

Test results that you can view and verify are essential because they will state the levels of both CBD and THC, plus a heavy metals analysis. If you can’t find this information, be very wary.

6. Made from “whole-plant” extracts, not CBD isolates

CBD oils made from whole-plant extracts, also called full-spectrum oils, are generally considered to be of higher quality than those made from CBD isolates.

The idea of an isolate sounds good; it’s pure CBD, but it’s often made from cheap materials and lacks the other cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes that work in partnership with CBD. It’s when these elements exist together that they become more effective, so full-spectrum extracts are a must.

7. Contains less than 0.2% THC

CBD oils made from hemp may contain trace amounts of THC—usually 0.2% or less—but it’s not nearly enough to get you high. However, sub-standard processing can boost the levels of THC to a degree that creates psychotropic effects. Not only is this a sign of a low-quality product, but it could even make the CBD oil illegal where you live. Check the labels and lab reports for exact figures before you make a purchase.

8. No outrageous medical claims

Research, as well as personal accounts, make it clear that CBD is a remarkable compound, but it’s not approved as a medical treatment by any government agency. That means it falls into the same category as vitamins and other supplements, and no company can legally claim that it treats or cures any medical condition, with a few very specific exceptions. If you’re looking at a CBD oil that makes claims like that, steer clear—it’s probably too good to be true.

Know About Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil

What is CBD Oil?

CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a compound naturally produced by hemp and cannabis plants. CBD is a cannabinoid, and is just one of the 113 cannabinoids hemp and cannabis plants produce. THC—CBD’s more famous cousin—is another compound from the cannabinoid family. However, unlike THC, CBD does not get you “high.”

To make CBD oil, CBD is first extracted from hemp plants and then infused into a carrier oil, usually MCT oil—which is derived from coconuts. Some brands may use other oils such as sunflower, grape seed or hemp seed oil to create their versions of CBD oil. In Canada, CBD oil has seen its popularity skyrocket. This is largely thanks to widespread testimonials coming from people trying CBD oil in Canada to improve their quality of life. There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence CBD helps people, but there’s little scientific evidence that supports CBD’s medical use so far. Fortunately, with the legalization of CBD in 2018, thousands of new studies are underway, with researchers seeking to understand how CBD works and what it can actually do.

Despite the science still playing catch-up, news of people’s positive experiences have spread and Canadians across the country have begun incorporating CBD into their self-care routines. For some this may mean a CBD capsule before bed, for others a CBD gummy or two in the morning, for others drops of CBD oil under the tongue. There are many ways to take CBD, including vaping CBD or smoking a joint rolled with high CBD cannabis flower, not to mention all the different topicals, CBD creams, bath, body, self-care products and lotions there are out there. There’s no shortage of selection out there, you just need to be discriminating. Always look for products that are tested for quality and impurities by a 3rd party lab.

Health Benefits of CBD Oil

Though there are thousands of testimonials out there from people using CBD oil in Canada that attest to CBD’s positive impacts on their quality of life, science can’t yet confirm all the hype. Be aware: most medical claims made about CBD are not backed by science.

What is generally known about CBD is that it promotes homeostasis in the body, and interacts with the human endocannabinoid system. CBD is also known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and to have anti-anxiety properties too. However, what is not known is exactly how CBD works to achieve the observed effects, or how to use it in a precise way to address specific issues for different individuals.

So far, there are only a very few approved uses for CBD as medicine. Sativex is a THC and CBD based medicine used to treat painful muscle spasms caused by MS and other conditions. Another, called Epidiolex, is FDA-approved for the treatment of seizures caused by Lennox- Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome. Since the legalization of CBD in 2018, thousands of studies seeking to understand exactly how CBD works and how effective it actually is have begun.

If you’re thinking of trying CBD, speak to a medical professional first. There are now many doctors now that are happy to advise their patients about using CBD. Many now even specialize in cannabis medicine. A growing number of them recognize CBD’s positive impacts, such as Canadian doctor Dani Gordon.

Be aware that CBD can interfere with the uptake of some prescription drugs in the same way that grapefruit does. Please do not take CBD if you are currently on medication.

How Do I Take CBD Oil Properly?

To answer this question, we should break it down into two parts:

1) What are the different ways to take CBD?

2) How do I use CBD oil properly?

Concerning the first question, there are plenty of convenient ways to take CBD oil in Canada. The various ways to take CBD are important to think about as they impact overall absorption, how quickly you feel the effects, and how localized the effects are. Vaping CBD, for example, will delivery CBD more quickly to your endocannabinoid system. Additionally, you’d absorb more CBD by vaping than if you ate CBD in chocolate. Why? When you consume CBD in a chocolate, it has to pass through your digestive tract. The human liver and digestive system are quite efficient at scrubbing CBD out.

If you vaped CBD, you’d feel stronger effects for a shorter amount of time compared to eating a CBD chocolate. CBD that must pass through the digestive tract is largely eliminated, so less gets absorbed. However, it is released more gradually to the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the effects are felt over a longer period of time.

One of the most popular ways to take CBD oil in Canada is by taking drops of CBD oil and holding it under your tongue for 30-90 seconds. There’s a large number of blood vessels there that offer CBD a route into the bloodstream that bypasses the digestive tract. This method is obviously less discreet than eating a gummy bear. Gummy bears just look like normal candy.

CBD creams and topicals are another method of getting CBD to your endocannabinoid receptors, many of which are found in muscle tissue and near the skin. CBD applied to the skin generally doesn’t make it into the bloodstream and affects mostly local ECS receptors. More CBD has to be applied to the skin to reach ECS receptors as CBD can’t simply go through skin, it can only get through pores. Generally speaking, only a very small fraction of the CBD applied to skin will make it down to local ECS receptors.

Concerning the second question of proper use, this is a question about dosage. What is the right dose? There is no answer to that question at this time. Scientists and medics are investigating this question, but it’ll be some time before we understand the human endocannabinoid system well enough to prescribe CBD with the accuracy of an FDA-approved medicine.

As no dosage advice is currently possible, people trying CBD oil in Canada for the first time are recommended to take the “Start low, go slow” approach. It’s also highly recommended that you keep a detailed daily journal of your experiences for at least a month or two. Start with a low dose of 5-10mg. Stay with it for a week and record your experiences daily. The effects of CBD are quite subtle as they provide no strong numbing sensation like some prescription medications. CBD only dials down certain systemic responses and brings your body back towards balance. When evaluating CBD’s effects, what you’re looking for is the absence or dialing down of things you’re trying to avoid.

After the first week has passed increase your dose by 5-10mg, depending on your weight. Record your experiences daily and see if you begin to notice differences. A week later, repeat this process of incremental increase, just 5-10mg. You can continue with this process of experimentation and self-observation for 1-2 months. This will give you a clearer idea of what dosage is helping you most. Factors that can affect your response to CBD is your natural tolerance, whether you are a habitual cannabis user, and the unique characteristics of your endocannabinoid system, among others.

It’s also important to know that more CBD is not necessarily better. CBD will act on different groups of endocannabinoid receptors at different dosages. One dose might make you sleepy, while another will make you more focused and alert, while another might be more anti-inflammatory. This is another reason why a steady, incremental process of experimentation is advised. Simply increasing the dose by a large amount won’t necessarily improve results. Look back through your journals for clues to finding your “sweet spot.”

What is the difference between Full-Spectrum CBD Oil and Hemp CBD Oil – No THC?

If you’ve shopped for CBD Oil in Canada before, you’ll probably have noticed that there are two main types. The most popular type of CBD oil in Canada is Full spectrum CBD oil. This kind of CBD oil is made with full spectrum CBD distillate—a resinous substance extracted from hemp/cannabis plants. Full spectrum distillate is rich with desirable natural compounds produced by its parent plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and more—hundreds of compounds! The CBD concentration in full spectrum distillate can vary, but it usually falls in a range between 70%-90% per volume. The THC content of full spectrum CBD distillate is usually somewhere around 0.3-0.5%.

Hemp CBD Oil – No THC is made with CBD isolate. Isolate is a form of CBD that has been refined from the original distillate to become more than 99% pure cannabidiol. CBD isolate is a white powder. When you combine it with a carrier oil, like MCT oil, grape seed oil, hemp seed oil or others, you’ve got CBD Oil – No THC.

The key difference between the two is in THC content. Hemp CBD Oil – No THC contains no THC whatsoever. This is important for people who are drug-tested for their jobs. The THC in a full spectrum CBD oil will show up on drug tests. Use a no-THC CBD oil if that’s the case for you.

Full spectrum CBD oil is more popular overall than CBD oils made using isolate. People claim they enjoy the effects more, but science has not yet proven whether this is empirically true. If an isolate-based CBD oil is not working for you and THC is not a problem, start on full spectrum cbd oil using the the “Start low, go slow” approach.
